In a shocking incident, a tiger was found hacked into pieces and dumped in the Borda jungle near the Chichpalli-Borda road on friday - 18th may 2012. The poachers had taken away the head and the paws of the tiger.

The forest department team has opined that the tiger was probably electrocuted some distance away and then they hacked away the head and paws and threw away the body to make a mockery of the forest departments efforts and demoralise them. The forest department also believes that members of the baheliya tribes from the neighbouring Madhya Pradesh are the make actors engaged in murdering the tigers.

The forest department has declared a reward of a lakh of rupees to anyone who can provide information about this poaching incident. The way the forest department is still grappling with the previous incidents like the poaching in the Palasgaon range in last month. So I am not sure whether they can really catch the culprits.

Dear All,
Apologies for the inordinate hiatus.

Just returned from a short Trip to Tadoba, Maharashtra.Thankyou Bhargava Srivari for the Pre Trip Tips and Tricks..!!

This was our (me and Anu) first trip to Tadoba and we enjoyed ourselves a lot. Anu was in great form with his 1D mark IV + 300 2.8 Mark II combo, but since it takes a lot to make him post, I am commencing with a Tiger image I made in the Teliya region of the Park.

This is the Telia lake Tigeress, Growling in annoyance with the elephants disturbing it and her 4 cubs from the cool waterbody she was lounging in.

She was above my eye level as she came down a hillock and crossed the road in front us ,barely fitted into my 7D +300 F4 combination.

EOS 7D + 300f4 IS L @ f8, 1/500 ISO 400.

Look forward to Comments
Cheers

Jumbos in Peril in Similipal

Elephants are in trouble in Similipal National Park, Odisha. Recently another batch of charred bones, skeletons of elephants were found decaying in Similipal National Park in the balikhala beat of Nawana South range. It is estimated that these elephants were killed about a month back.

It is surprising that the forest department senior officials were unaware about the mass killing of elephants in Similipal. Odisha's Chief Wildlife Warden Shri JD Sharma has ordered the suspension of the range officer of Nawana South range. The Chief Wildlife warden has said that now Wildlife Institute of India has been assigned the task of carrying out an enquiry. The samples will be sent to WII so that DNA testing can be done to find out the age, sex and number of elephants dead.

A massive animal like an elephant weighing 3-4 tons is not easy to dispose off. So this suggests the complicity of the forest department officials.

However, sceptics also say that the move to send the remains to WII is to kind of wash off its hands. As the Forest department now can hide under the plea that the enquiry is on. Public memory is short as they say. Incidentally a similar mass murder of elephants had happened in 2010 and no action has been taken till date.

Jumbos are in serious danger of being extirpated from Similipal. The Odisha elphants have good physical characteristics including bigger tusks. Unfortunately, poachers/mankind is winning its war against the elephants.

Sabyasachi

The Wildlife Institute of India (WII) would now step in to investigate the recent mass poaching of elephants in Simlipal Tiger Reserve in Odisha.
