The Telangana State Wildlife Board met for the first tome on 06th Dec 2016 since Telangana state was formed 2.5 years back. In its first meeting it has passed several resolutions that are going to be highly detrimental to the two tigers reserves in the state.

Ø The board has cleared the proposal for Uranium exploration over 83 sq. km in Amrabad Tiger Reserve. Amrabad Tiger Reserve is the part of NSTR (Nagarjunasagar Srisailam Tiger Reserve) that falls in Telangana. The presence of Uranium in NSTR hills was first announced about 18 years back during the rule of Chandra Babu Naidu. Neither Chandra Babu Naidu nor the next CM, YSR, gave the permission for Uranium exploration in NSTR.

Now, the present government of Telangana is going ahead with granting the permission for Uranium exploration in core area of NSTR that may prove to be the death knell for one of the largest Tiger habitat in India. Following is the news article.

Ø The Board has taken the decision to open a 41 Kms road through Kawal Tiger Reserve for heavy vehicles. Both environmentalists and the forest officials are concerned that heavy vehicular traffic will spell dome of the remaining wildlife in Kawal as well as provide opportunities for timber smugglers and poachers, both of these are already posing a grave threat to Kawal Tiger Reserve.
