this is the season of macro out here. good number of butterflies & insects. pl identify this one. i had to use 100-400 mm to capture this one. very difficult to stalk it. thanks.

Looks like one of the swallowtails (Papilionidae) but I'm not sure as I don't have my field guide with me. You could PM our member Vikram Gupchup for the ID.
I agree that telephoto lenses often work better for butterflies, especially the skittish ones. In fact I used to photograph a lot more butterflies when I used to use my Canon SX10, a megazoom compact camera :). Of course, the finer details resolved with a macro lens do help. Including the "tail" here would have been better.

Nice colourful species. Agree with Abhishek, a bit more space at the bottom would have been good. What was the aperture and shutter speed? Was it possible to move a bit more to the left? Agree on hind sight you can suggest a lot of things, but it might not be that easy to capture it in the field as it keeps flying around. Thanks for sharing.

If you are interested, there is a butterflyindia meet happening around Roing around Oct- Nov. That's practically at your doorstep . You will have to join up the yahoo group or facebook group to attend.
