Hi All!

Posting something after a long long time.

Robber flies are the top guns of the insect world.
They are predators who catch other flying insects in flight.
The thorny legs grip the prey tightly.
The stabbing and sucking mouth parts deliver a fatal neurotoxic venom and then suck the prey dry.
The thick bristles are meant to protect the robberflies delicate eyes and head from the prey struggling or fighting back.

Welcome back Vikram !

You have provided some very nice information. After watching the image and reading the information provided one gets to understand how complex is the evolution. The thorny legs has nicely gripped the branch. It first looked like a straw to me. The details have come out well. I am sure when the common man gets to see such information and image then they will take interest in the macro world.

Thanks for sharing.

Cheers,
Sabyasachi

Nice backlit image. The halteres (small yellowish knob like structures behind the thorax) are used to detect changes in wind direction and air pressure and accordingly correct balance in flight. This one looks hairier than most robber flies I've seen.
TFS, thanks also for the detailed info.
