Side lighting doesn't help in bringing out details, as one part of the body remains in shadow and you will invariably miss the details. For birds it is better to use frontal lighting as that will give you more details. So when shooting in side lighting situations one needs to go easy on the contrast. Higher contrast deepens the shadows and we don't get to see whatever details are there.

Your new 300mm?

Sucheth - Is this the same bird you have posted some time back ?. If so Im fairly sure it is a Tawny. But then Iding Aquilas is on hell of a confusing affair. One good tip to distinguish rapax and hastata on a perched bird is to see the shape of the nostrils. The two birds are different in build and there are also other plumage and morphological differences which are more subtle and difficult to apply on a photograph of a perched bird. but if you have an image where you can reasonably see the shape of the nostril it is the best bet. Spotted has a more or less round nostril. Tawny will have a oval / slit nostril. In the previous image the general silhouette , shape and size of the bill, nostril shape indicate a Tawny eagle.
