While many of us fight for tigers, Mohammed Dilawar has been quiety working to save the sparrow.

In 2008 he was selected as one of Time magazine's Heroes of the Environment.

wow...never thought sparrows would be endangered too...right from childhood i have seen sparrows building nests in our terrace and other places in my building... and as of today too I see a healthy number of sparrows in and around my place.

I still find it hard to believe that they are endangered....but the facts say so.

Met Mohammed at the BNHS (Bombay Natural History Society) a couple of years back, and bought 2 nest boxes too.
Sparrows really are endangered, in Mumbai at least. So much that I often try to photograph flocks nowadays when I see them. This is apparently due to extensive predation on sparrows and their chicks by domestic cats, crows etc., pesticide sprayed grains, and also by the climate swings caused by global warming.
