Fast moving and busy excavating this colourful denizen of Nagarhole was very
difficult to bring into focus.D3200 f/l 300mm 1/125s f/6-6 iso1400

Nice you got it looking towards you. Slight less space on the left and more on the right would be good. Seems the light was quite low. Was this taken in the evening safari? Thanks for sharing.

They often runaway at the sight or sound of an approaching gypsy. Often they stop and look back like all mongoose species. One needs to be ready for those moments.

Are you using a 300mm fixed focal length lens or is it a zoom lens? If the focus is not locking fast, then slightly move the focus ring with your left fingers. It will help in speeding up the auto focus. Also you can try to anticipate the place the mongoose or any other animal is moving to and be ready by focusing at that spot. The moment the animal reaches that spot, clicking becomes easy.
