Nice first post. Good perch and eye contact. Wish the twig had not blocked the eye. Moving also would not have helped much in this condition :(. The vertical composition looks good. Thanks for sharing.

Owl is a nice subject. A bit more depth of field would be better. When the subject is far from you, it is important to look at areas/objects that reflect light more and can get overexposed. In case if you are having difficulty then you should check the preview and dial the exposure compensation (in this case negative EC). Once you get a hang of the exposure, watching the preview would not be so important. Slightly lowering the colour temperature will also help in containing the highlights.

Less space at the top would have been better. In this image the owl is bang on the centre. When the subject is centrally placed, it becomes static so alternate compositions may be explored. Thanks for sharing.
