Yet another beauty from Sunderbans. The Brown-winged Kingfisher is classified as Near Threatened, is close to qualifying for or is likely to qualify for a threatened category in the near future. It is threatened by habitat loss.
The variety of colourful Kingfisher which Sunderbans has is phenomenal , It is a challenge to photograph them since none of them are habitual of human presence and hence fly off the moment they see any boat approaching them.
Unlike other park the safaris are done in boat and hence once you sight a bird it is very difficult to manure the boat in the last moment.
Loved the trip , entirely different experience all together.

Glad you managed to photograph this rarely seen species, inspite of the difficulties involved, in its natural habitat. It is perched (if I am not mistaken )on a mangrove tree.Looking forward for more from the Sunderbans diary.

Rare image. In this paradise of kingfishers [seven species], you could photograph this large colourful bird having strongly built red bill. This magnificent bird, a mangrove specialist, is perched on a Kankra tree -nice coincidence. Thanks for sharing.SaktiWild

Nice sighting. Wish there was some light on the bird (not in your hands). You did well in the given conditions. I agree photographing in Sunderban is truly amazing and quite difficult and challenging than in other national parks. Thanks for sharing.

Nice to see this species, with a very restricted range.
