The Great Indian hornbill is easiest to track during the breeding season because of this resounding duet which the male and female emit. Recorded with a Nokia mobile in the Nelliampathy hills of North Kerala. you can also hear some other birds but the 'KOK' of the hornbill is quite audible..... I guess i need to get myself some easy to carry and better quality recording device.

Loud and clear. Nicely done for a mobile phone. When was this recorded?

Nice to hear this sound. Persons not familiar with this call would be surprised. There are many different vocalisations of the same bird. Record with whatever device you have in hand, so that our knowledge of the species improves.

I hope they can create better preamps in the phones. We have to observe the laws of physics - the intensity varies inversely with distance. So one needs to be closer to the source of sound. Directional microphones like shotguns/long guns reject the off axis sounds and helps in recording the sound better. However, the closer you are, better is the sound.

Good to hear the sound of Hornbills.Nelliampathy is a nice place for birding. There is a place called 'Manpara" which is accessible only by jeep.Last time when we were there even the jeep safari was not allowed because of heavy rains.....

Thanks all for comments

Abhishek this was in Oct last. Mrudul- they were on a fig tree around 10mts, but it was quiet except for the other birds.

shankar sab manpara is now closed to tourists in all seasons and I feel it is a good move by the FD. But there are some fantastic places you can trek to in Nelliampathy. let me know if you go there next time.
