Got this shot in our campus. This is probably one of those shots where i had to really think how to get the exposure right without losing time before the bird flew off. The bright sky was a problem, but i managed to get the right exposure for the bird... Here's the Result.

NIKON D80 with 18-135mm (Near Full Frame - small chip off from the right)
EXP 1/50 (+1/3 EV) (Handheld)
F 5.6
ISO 100
Spot metering and shot in Av Mode.

The eye is sharp. Yes the bright BG does make it difficult. You have got it quite well. Maybe u can think of a bit more crop from the right to exclude the bright light.

Look forward to more..

You've done well on exposure, but such shots rarely work because of the bright, and overexposed, patches in the image.

Increased the blacks a bit and opened up the shadows...

I agree with the repost as the blacks were a bit washed out in the earlier.

I am happy that you are able to move in close with a small lens. Lets see what all you are able to get with that lens.

After uploading my comment, did a further tweaking to your image.
Cheers,
