Looks like this is a large crop so the details are not there. Also when you are pointing your camera at the sky and the subject is small in the frame, the camera meter does its calculations based on the sky as the subject and exposes accordingly. So the bird which is darker than the sky becomes underexposed and hence further loses details.

Shadows and borders take away our attention and it becomes difficult to evaluate images. So borders may be fine for facebook posts but for critiquing images it creates a problem.
