On the way trekking into the Great Himalayan national park. This barbet had been calling away for some time and one of our porters walking up ahead, signaled me his position. Rounding a corner of the trail edged by steep slopes and a rushing Tirthan river 300 ft+ below, I saw it perched on this branch in the tree's canopy. The image is a bit grainy as had to use a high ISO, the light was poor.

Nikon D 90 with Nikkor 300mm f4 + TC 14E, at 420mm, ISO 250, 1/1000s - F/5.6

Lovely sighting of this rare species. The ISO was 250 or more? The colours look nice. Slight off centered composition would have been nice. Thanks for sharing.

Lovely. Some noise is okay if the high ISO ensures details. From your description, I think I know the exact location :-). Had sighted quite a few great barbets and blue whistling thrushes there myself.

Hi, thanks, its ISO 1250 and ISO 250 (typo), had put it on auto ISO and was shooting in shutter priority at 1/1000s as the 300mm f4 is a non VR lens and also to account for it flying away.

Abhishek - this was just after the mobile point...lots of Great barbets calling, also sighted and shot the fire breasted flower pecker...will be posting its image soon

Beautiful image. The barbet composed little off centered (left) would have been even better. Thanks for sharing.

Beautiful bird. When the bird has got a dark head, it is very important to expose for the blacks to be adequately exposed, even at the cost of exposing some of the highlights in the canopy. That will give better noise in the image.

I have been planning to go to this place for a long time. So happy to see another image from the Great Himalayan National Park. Thanks for sharing.
Cheers,
