The shadow side of its head is facing you. In bird photography the best details are obtained when the light is from behind the photographer ie. in frontal lighting situations. In this case the underparts and the darks are underexposed. It becomes tough to expose because when the bird is smaller in the frame, the highlights in the reeds get blown while trying to correctly expose for the subject. If you check the histogram of your image, you will find that the subject is close to the left and some portions touching the left bar. That will lead to less details and more noise.

Nice landing pose. Good you got the eye in the clear. The lighting was difficult. What time was this photographed? The best time to photograph is early morning and late evenings. That time you wont have the harsh light and problem of over or under exposing an image. Thanks for sharing.
