The two matriarchs and the two calves suddenly became aware of our presence and defensively formed a single file calf--matriarch-calf-- matriarch so that it was impossible to see them all together.Periyar, Sept 2014, afternoon. Canon60D+100-400.F/5-6 FL320mm ISO 800.

March past before humanity by gentle colossus, although harried by the same living beings. Will we ever learn!
Nice behaviour captured. Thanks for sharing.SaktiWild

Interesting behavior captured. The raised trunk of the calf in the front adds to the composition. Its amazing to see how they immediately formed a single line in defense. On a lighter note after seeing this image I remembered a scene from the Jungle Book movie, where the elephants are shown doing a march past with a calf in the front :). Thanks for sharing.

Nice image. The image is a bit on the brighter side. The elephant calf and adult who were behind and on our right in the previous image have moved to our left to stand in a single file.
Thanks for sharing.

Thanks everybody for the reviews.Roopak, the moment they had ascertained our presence they bunched up and moved down the mountainside into the dense undergrowth on their left .They were about 150 meters ahead .Will be posting a few more photographs.V S Shankar, yes this was enroute to Gavi reservoir.
