This appears to be on a relatively open branch. So approaching close may be a challenge. In bird photography 300 mm is relatively wide end. Instead of cropping big and losing details on the image, one can also try environmental compositions showing the habitat of the species to show a link between the bird and its environment. With suitable higher depth of field, those images would appear much better and would suit the focal length. Once you buy long tele lenses, it would not be possible to create such wider environmental images.
