Chousingha – The four horned Antelope - in TATR

We had a tremendous morning Safari with very close of view of a male Tiger who passed from behind our Gypsy on the shore of Tadoba lake. Anticipation was high when we started the afternoon Safari from Khutawanda gate which allow only 3 gypsies. We were the first to enter the forest and soon our guide pointed to a flickering image in the heat waves, we came littler near tentatively and saw this beautiful animal, still from a distance. A few moments later it gently went inside the Jungle thicket.

Rare and stately. Even the front pair of horns is about 2.5 or 3 cm long (not studlike as in many cases), the hind pair may be 8 to 10 cm. Wonderful image. Thanks for sharing.SaktiWild

Such a graceful species. Nice pose and composition. The heat wave gives a painting like feel to the image. Did you sight the tiger? Thanks for sharing.

Nice to see this. M. Krishnan has written that in one incident when two chowsingha's came across him, they half crouched and gave a vertical leap which cleared more than a foot above his head and hat. He was six feet tall. so the leap was a bit more than 7 feet high. He has termed it as something incredible as it was a leap without the benefit of running and added momentum. I will dig out the exact quote later when I am back in base.

Mrudul, Yes we did saw tigers in this trip starting with a big male on the shore of Tadoba lake, then tigresses Lara and Sonam and finally the cubs of Maya playing in a pool in Pandharpauni in the last safari :). Summers are very good.
