There were quite a few lesser known places which were amazing for birding in Uttarakhand. One such place is Makkumath, which is around 15 kms from Chopta at a lower altitude. While most people who go to Tungnath stay at either Chopta or places near by we decided to stay at a lesser known place which is Makkumath. This is the place which is the winter capital of Tungnath Baba and is a quaint little town. The birding options were brilliant at Makkumath, we just walked on the main road for birding which was quite narrow and completely devoid of traffic as people hardly visit, only the locals do. My daughter and myself were quite surprised at the abundance of birds drinking water along the streams and frolicking around as we walked slowly on the main path for some time. This particular woodpecker took a liking to us and walked in our direction, we sat in the middle of the road to observe it and it felt very comfortable in our presence which resulted in this image.

Nice sighting. Great that you found a good place (not frequented by tourists) to enjoy the nature with the peace and quiet. I wad not aware of this place, will keep in mind when I next visit Uttarakhand :). Look forward to more from Makkumath. Thanks for sharing.
