These Gaurs at Periyar Tiger Reserve were very alert to the presence of other animals!Probably they were looking for the proximity of a predator! There seems to be plenty of Gaurs at PTR and that may be an indicator of good no of Tigers and Leopards. But seeing the predators is next to impossible at PTR!

They are taking turns to keep the watch. When one is drinking, the other is looking around to check for any possible danger. True, sighting a tiger or a leopard is quite rare in PTR :). Maybe as the boat ride is a short one and it follows a regular route (where due to human presence the predators don't come). Nice capture. Thanks for sharing.

One often finds gaurs and elephants in the boat ride. Often tourists feel bad that they didn't sight a tiger. If they are educated about the size, weight and the fact that these are world's biggest cattle species and that too wild, then perhaps they would get an idea about the strength and power of the gaurs.

Periyar is a nice place with its own challenges. There used to be a two day and night trek with former poachers conducting it. Not sure if that is still on or not. How long were you there in periyar?
