"Woodpecker feathers are some of the most durable in the bird world; and they need to be as they are rubbed against rough tree bark everyday.... Woodpeckers come in many colours but most have black tail feathers caused by a pigment, melanin, which also adds strength and wear resistance. These qualities are needed by woodpeckers for going about their daily lives.... Stong tails act as props to keep woodpeckers on vertical tree surfaces and are long to place the center of gravity nearer to the trunk." - 'Woodpeckers' by Gerard Gorman [RSPB]
