This was shot around 12:00 AM in Parambikulam. The Vehicle's Spot light was focussed on the pair... Definitely not a photographer's image... Posting this as a behaviour image. The calf kept butting the udders to sustain the flow of milk...

I'd like to add, that the herd was a large one of around 50-60. All the cows and the calves were concentrated in one area. The alpha Bull was on the lookout on one side. All the nursing mothers were bunched up and the calves could be seen weaning there. Safety in herds...

I had photographed this scene in Parambikulam last year on October 3rd. I think the calf was suckling for about five minutes and then a forest department canter came and honked. So I had to move ahead so that it could pass. Naturally, the gaur got disturbed and stopped its calf from suckling.

Canon EOS 40D, EF 400mm f2.8 L IS USM, EF 2x II ie. at 800mm optical focal length, full frame, ISO 200, F5.6, 1/50 second.

@Sabyasachi: isnt that calf a bit too old for suckling milk
