This is from Hessarghatta. When Praveen and Anu were busy chasing the Indian roller, I clicked this one. I think this is a paddyfield pipit.
Canon EOS 1D Mark II, Canon EF 400mm f2.8 L IS USM, EF 2xII ie. at 800mm optical focal length, (with the 1.3x crop of my camera the effective focal lenghth was 1.3x800 = 1024 mm). ISO 200, f9, 1/500, bean bag.
This is a full frame image.
Look forward to your comments and critiques.
Cheers,

Nice composition. The perch looks nice. at that focal length wonder how the F9 hasn't covered the tail.

Nice composition & perch, good details however as pointed out by Bibhav the tail is slightly OOF.

Different composition. The thorns are nicely in focus displaying its enviornment. Nice clean back ground. Sharp.

It is a big challenge to get the entire bird in focus. It is easier if the bird is perched parallel to the camera sensor.
In this case the bird was quiet close. I think it may be at 11-12 feet. The depth of field at 800mm at that distance is barely a few mm and is not sufficient to cover the bird from beak to tail. For example, depth of field at
f9 at 12 feet: 0.24 inch = 0.6 cm
f11 at 12 feet: 0.36 inch = 0.9 cm
f16 at 12 feet:0.48 inch = 1.2 cm
If the bird is at a distance, then the depth of field would be higher. In that case, the bird will also occupy a small part of the frame. That is why when you crop big, you will find the entire bird covered by depth of field. And this is one way, I know if the image is a big crop :D

Wonderful shot .. the details have come out well. It does look like a pipit :-)
Personally I would have preferred a little crop from the bottom .
Please post your Juvenile Brahminy Kite and the Egyption Vulture pics
