New Delhi: Stressing “havoc played” by environment unfriendly plastic bags, the Supreme Court on Friday refused to stay the ban imposed on use of these bags in the Capital.

“Look at the hazards. Plastic bags have been playing havoc in the country,” a bench comprising Chief Justice KG Balakrishnan said, adding that it was better to return to good old days of using bags made of cloth, jute and paper.

All India Plastic Industries Association alleged that the notification banning the use of plastic carry bags was issued without following the proper procedure.

The January 7, 2009, notification of the Delhi government bans the use of plastic bags in shopping malls, five-star hotels, restaurants, dairies and fruits and vegetable outlets under the Environment Protection Act.

The association had challenged the Delhi High Court decision that upheld a Delhi Government notification imposing a complete ban on use of plastic bags in the Capital.
