This image is the next shot in the series of Pelican images photographed at Nelapattu Bird Sanctuary on sunday.

Canon EOS 1D Mark II, Canon EF 400mm f2.8 L IS USM, EF 1.4xII, ISO 400, f7.1, 1/2000 sec, EV: -1/3rd, Aperture Priority.

The Pelican was landing when it touched down on water, then again took off a couple of hops and first opened its bill like a skimmer as show in the previous image in the following link.

Then the Pelican had a jab at something - perhaps a fish. I had never seen this behaviour before. Look forward to you comments.

Truly interesting behaviour. The water drop trail looks good and give the sense of direction even more. the water surface looks really great. Seems the pelican was using its feet as a water brake, wasnt it?

Bibhav,

The Pelican's use their feet to brake. You can see the webbing in their feet totally stretched to be used to create maximum resistance.
