Lovely action in flight captured, just wondering if the grayish color on neck area is due to excess toning down highlights or it is natural?

From the exif details I find that you had clicked it at 200mm. That means the Pelican would have flown close by. The sharpness is good.

If it is from Ranganathittu, then I would say not easy to move to left in the boat to get a good angle. Better to miss the shot than risk your equipment falling into water. Bird entering into the frame always looks better.
