Agree abt the space. But I really love this image. Lovely details.
Since you photographed this at a relatively short focal length of 280mm, I would also have suggested a tight portrait using a higher focal length, in which case the fanned out tail feathers would be the BG.

The light seems to be pretty low. Else, I would have suggested a narrow aperture. I agree with Abhishek, that you can compose wider as well as a tight.
