This image is created near village at BR Hills yesterday (Saturday) 22nd May'10, there were over 200-300 butterflies but couldn't capture all in one frame
Experts can id the butterfly and explain this type of behaviour

Camera Model Canon EOS 40D, 100-400mm
Tv( Shutter Speed ) 1/1000
Av( Aperture Value ) 8
ISO 250
Focal length 400mm
Hand held

Nicely composed. There is an incomplete butterfly near the lower left edge of the frame. Including it might have enhanced the composition. The low angle looks good. You could have used a narrower aperture for more DOF, since the shutter speed was more than sufficient. Did you try any shots at wide angle?

This behaviour is called mud-puddling. The butterflies congregate and suck up essential salts from the soil. This behaviour has been discussed in the Natural History section, you can find the article here http://www.indiawilds.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3458

Beautiful photograph. I liked the low angle. The patterns are nice. I agree that more DOF would have been good. The pano crop looks good. Thanks for sharing.

This looks nice. I agree that using a narrower aperture like f11 or even f16 would have been good as all the butterflies would have been in focus.

Cheers,

Praveen, Well spotted and photographed. This is Common Emigrant, also called as Lemon Emigrant. Butterflies are mud puddling in the wet soil under the sun.

The pano crop works well here. I like the breaking of the theme by the one butterfly of a different species (Blue Tiger??). I agree about the need for more DOF. Thanks for sharing.
