Hives of Rock Bees Apis dorsata, photographed at Karnala, Maharashtra. Was reminded of this image when I saw Sankar's photograph of the beehive :).

There are around 8 hives along the same rock outcrop, 5 of which can be seen here. Most of them are around 4 feet in length.

Nice record shot. These bees are vital elements of pollination and hence are an essential cog in the cycle of life of plants. Very often we neglect these creatures. Thanks for sharing.

Nice observation. I agree with Bibhav about the important role of bees. We can see these hives only in few places. We have driven them out of our cities :(. Thanks for sharing.

There was a report that the farmers in China are now doing the pollination on their own as bees have vanished.
