I would have liked the dhole to be seated more to the left of the frame as it is looking in the other direction. Which Af point you normally use?

Normally stick to the Center for non action / flight shots

You can acquire focus with the central AF point by half pressing the shutter. Then keep your hold on the shutter and then recompose the scene to place the animal offcentre and then fully press the shutter.

That will help you in maintaining the focus on the subject and also getting the subject in a more pleasing offcentre position.

Will the focus remain true even if we zoom in or out ? Or do we have to recompose using the same focal length at which we acquired the focus ?

The focal length has to remain the same when you are recomposing. That means you are not changing anything except the composition.
