The issue is that light is on the opposite side. If light was from behind you, then the eyes would have been properly lit. Whenever the bird is still for a moment, you should click. During those times, you can get a sharp shot with relatively lower shutter speed. The composition is fine. Keep on trying. I am sure you will soon get better and better.
