After 5 trips to Ranganathittu for this bird could I get a decent close shot of this species.

This is a full frame image.
Comments and Critiques welcome...

Lovely perch, details and eye contact. Sharp image. It seems your 5 trips to Ranganathittu have finally paid off :). Thanks for sharing.

Wow! your persistance paid off Bibhav. This is by far one of the best images of Pied KF that I have seen recently. Great work!

Nice and sharp bibhav and excellent placement of the subject. a little more brightness? or it could be my monitor.

Brilliant...!!!! Its not easy to get the correct exposure on pied subjects, you have done outstandingly well !!!
Also i though you have come close enough to the bird without disturbing it, it looks more like a 500f4+1.4x image rather than a 300f4+1.4x image...!! kudos to you for that as well.

Actually thanks to the boatman, we could get close. He knew very well how not to disturb the bird and there were just 2 people on the boat and we kept still. :-)
It was a really nice experience to be so close to one... I was unsure at one point if I should be looking through the viewfinder or with my bare eyes...

I agree with Dipankar. It is not easy to get these guys close. Once I had got pied kingfisher close during boating, however the boatsman is so used to guys with long lenses that he moved the boat much closer than I was comfortable.Wish you could have used a higher shutter speed. If possible moving to the right would have been great. How long did you get to see this one?

Sabyasachi, the sighting was for around 5 mins (up close time) after which it flew off. This was shot between the branches near the place where they nest in Ranganathittu, so couldn't move much. I know the transecting tree in the background and the beak distract, but had no other option. Will keep going back there to make better images of these fellows before I leave Mysore... :)

lovely bird... I think I need to work on my patience factor as I dun have much of it.
