Head (and eye) is identified with a person. The head hunter tribes used to cut off the head of the person as it is believed that they capture the soul with the head. So in most of the cultures head is considered as the most important.

Scientifically, it is seen that when there is less food available for the fetus, the energy is spent in developing the brain rather than other organs like heart, liver etc.

So considering all these points, in arts head is also given the maximum importance. Hence the focus has to be on the head, unless and until you specifically want one part of the body to be in focus and others out of focus. So you should focus on the head and eye.

You have to consider the aperture used. As depth of field is dependent on the aperture. To get the eye and other parts of the body in focus, you have to use a narrow aperture. Even then, the tail may not be in focus. So side profile always helps in getting better depth of field.

Both the images are having good eye contact.

In the first one using a narrower aperture would be good to get the whole body in focus. You could have increased the ISO further.

Vertical composition would look good in the second image. The light is good. Including the tail in full would have been nice. Thanks for sharing.
