This shot was taken when the sky was cloudy and overcast. Therefore it wasnt possible to get any shadows in the shot.

More space all around will be good. In my opinion, a tight composition is better when shooting a a close-up of the bird with its wholebody not being visible and a loose composition is better in images like this. It will be easier to critique if you share the exif data :)

I agree with Bhargava. More space around the bird would be good. Where was this pelican photographed? Early in the morning is a good time to photograph pelicans as the light at that time is soft.

Hi Friends,
This pic was shot at approx 8 am on a sunday morning. It had rained for half an hour before this shot was taken. The sky was overcast and cloudy.
I had used a 500mm lens with a 1.4x TC. Becoz of which i was able to get only the beak and neck. On removing the TC, I still couldnt get the bird, until i moved back by nearly 12-15 feet.It wasnt possible to move back anymore. This was shot in Lala Bagh Gardens, on 23rd May 2011.
The ISO was 1000 i think. I can get back to u with the exact settings later on.
Thanx once again for the constructive comments.
