Not sure about the id of the bird. I know black ibis have a crimson/red patch at the top of their head, so this one is a juvenile perhaps?

Shot near nagpur.
canon 60D, canon 100-400 L IS USM
f7.1, 1/400sec, EV 0, 400mm, cropped, eval meteing, almost full-frame

I think it is Juvenile. Nice walking pose. The eye contact is good. The composition is a bit tight for me, some more space all around would be good. Thanks for sharing.

Nice shot. Does look like a juv black ibis. Love the environment and the low angle. It is quite a tight composition, but it still works for me. Maybe just a little more space below for the virtual toes.

Hi Bhargava,
This is a juv. Black Ibis. The focus has locked on the body and the DOF doesnt cover the eyes. Had the eyes been tack sharp in focus this would have had more appeal. Also moving a bit to the right would have got you a flatter angle with the bird parallel to the frame.

Liked the low angle of the shot. Agree with Bibhav regarding the focus, eyes could have been a bit more sharper had they been in focus. Details in the body look good.

If this is not full frame image, then I would prefer more space, atleast at left and bottom. I would like to know how much crop and which AF point did you use? What was the ISO? Any blurring done?

It's ISO 400. I haven't done any blurring. And going by the formula you shared, this image is a 7% crop. I had used the center AF point and locked focus on the wing- intentionally. I was hoping to get the eye covered by the DoF which did not entirely happen. I must admit that my actual idea was to dial in a f10 but stopped quite short of it fearing an insufficient shutter speed.

The depth of field is less if the subject distance is less.

F7.1 which you used gives you a depth of field of 9.2 inches (4.6 inches infront and same amount behind the point of focus) at a distance of 12.60 meters.


f10 would have given you 14.8 inches of depth of field.
