I agree that a natural perch would have been better. When a bird takes off from a perch directly towards you, it becomes difficult to get the head portion in focus. The reason being in the perched condition, the focus is slightly behind on the perch and when the bird takes off, the head portion is a few inches before the plane of focus. If the bird is flying more to the side, then there is no issue with the focus as its entire body being parallel to the sensor plane remains in focus.

Nice take off pose. I agree with the above comments. The background is nice. Wish the light was better for a higher shutter speed. Thanks for sharing.
