A portrait of a Hyllus jumping spider (family Salticidae), shot in Karwar.
The eyes of jumping spiders are capable of vision in the normal human range, as well as into the UV range. The eyes (especially the front-facing ones) produce a very high resolution image, but this restricts them to a very narrow field of vision. To compensate this drawback, these spiders have 6-8 considerably large eyes all around their head.

Canon 500D, 100mm Macro USM
SS 1/200
Av 6.3
EC -1/3
ISO 1600
Cropped a little bit from all sides. A bit of NR used.
This was also processed on a smaller screen, but altered the quality a little... Let me know how it looks. Will start processing on a larger monitor very soon.

Thanks, C&C awaited.

Wow! What a spider!! Never knew that a creature with so many eyes around the head existed :P Is that green OOF patch in the foreground beneath the eyes intentional?

Yes, I forgot to mention it... the OOF foreground is intentional. Wanted a "low-angle" kind of shot depicting the spider at eye level, so chose to rest the camera along the twig. I found this shot to be more appealing than the ones without any OOF FG elements.
The shallow DoF was also something I wanted, though I feel a couple of stops narrower (if the light had permitted it :() would have been better.

Nice image and good information. Wonder how the brain processes data from so many eyes.

Cheers,

Jumping spiders seem to have highly developed brains, considering they are invertebrates. The eye-brain coordination is so highly developed that they have been known to distinguish, recognise and respond to colours, something that is not expected from an invertebrate.
The primary high-res vision for the purpose of hunting comes from the 2 anterior median eyes (the very large ones).

Nice composition. Makes the eyes stand out. The details are nice. The reflection in the eyes make it more interesting. Thanks for sharing the detailed information. Look forward to more.
