LAKE SUCCESS, N.Y., November 16, 2011 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today announced updated availability information for three of its EF lenses:

Canon EF 200‐400mm f/4L IS USM EXTENDER l.4x lens availability yet to be determined
Canon EF 500mm f/4L IS II USM lens availability yet to be determined

Canon EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM EXTENDER l.4x lens

The EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM EXTENDER l.4x is being developed as an L-series super-telephoto lens with an integrated 1.4x extender and high-performance Image Stabilizer technology. The new lens will offer exceptional flexibility by incorporating a built-in 1.4x extender that increases the maximum focal length to 560mm for sports and wildlife photography. High-quality images with high levels of resolution and contrast will be possible through the use of advanced optical materials such as fluorite crystal. The new lens will also include dust- and water-resistant construction designed for extended usage under harsh conditions.
Canon EF 500mm f/4L IS II USM Lens for Sports and Nature Photography

The Canon EF 500mm f/4L IS II USM offers professional photographers a lighter weight option for those situations that require a long focal length with improved image quality and enhanced durability over its predecessor. Great for a wide range of applications, the EF 500mm f/4L IS II USM lens is ideal for professional photojournalism, sports photography and nature and wildlife photography. The optical formula of the new lens has been enhanced to include two fluorite lens elements for improved image quality and reduced chromatic aberration. Canon has reduced the overall weight of the lens by 18 percent from 136.5 oz to 112.5 oz.

The Canon EF 500mm f/4L IS II USM lens is expected to be available for an estimated retail price of $10,499.
Canon EF 600mm f/4L IS II USM Lens for Wildlife and Photojournalism

The Canon EF 600mm f/4L IS II USM is the successor to the current EF 600mm IS lens first introduced in 1999. This new lens has been engineered for outstanding optical performance and durability and includes two new fluorite lens elements for improved quality and reduced chromatic aberration. Helping photographers in the field, Canon has reduced the overall weight of the lens by a substantial 27 percent from 189.1 oz to 138.3 oz.

The Canon EF 600mm f/4L IS II USM lens is expected to be available for an estimated retail price of $12,999.

The problem of electronic manufaturers in Japan continues. First it was the Tsunami induced earthquake which virtually wiped out the tier 3-4 companies in the supply chain. The Japanese being incredibly resilient, their industry rebuilt itself. However, the nature Gods were not happy and Thailand faced its worst flooding and industries, infrastructure and people have suffered enormously. This has again impacted the Japanese industry. Nikon's plants in Thailand has been impacted as well.

In an unprecedented move, the Japanese Government has given the Thai workers employed in Japanese companies a maximum of six months work permit to work in Japan. We will be keeping track of developments.

PS: The price of the 600mm has increased by about a 1000 USD. previous prices here: http://www.indiawilds.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6080

I have read on canon rumors that the availability of the 500/600 f4 will be pushed well into 2012, and in fact may not available even for London 2012. As for the 200-400, it is only safe to assume that it will be announced only after canon fix a arrival date for the 500/600 lenses.

Cheers

Well, I can't say about rumours. Mrudul has posted the official Canon press release and I had given the information I had about the industry situation (being in the industry that much you can take it as fact :) ).

The sports shooters primarily use the 400mm f2.8 lens and the one with second generation IS is available. So that part is covered for the Olympics. Canon will make the 500 and the 600mm available for the Olympics if they find demand for it from the main agencies.

The lens manufacturing capacity is pretty limited due to the unfortunate events. Canon is also now launching lenses for Cine cameras. And it is pretty serious about it. The tolerances for those Cine lenses with EF mount are much much higher and the manufacturing cost as well as the sale price is also higher. For example the two Cine zooms recently launched CN-E 14.5-60mm T2.6 L S and CN-E 30-300mm T2.95-3.7 lenses cost 45000 USD. You read it right. They cost fortyfive thousand US dollars. And the three cine primes 24mm T1.5, 50mm T1.3, 85mm T1.3 cost nearly 7k USD.

There are also other cine lenses in development. Canon has to quickly provide a full range of Cine lenses as it is massively targeting Hollywood. So Canon has to carefully weigh its capability vs short term needs.

Cheers,
Sabyasachi

what is the estimated price of EF-200-400mm f/4L? i would rather go for 200-400 f/4 than 400mm f/4 for simple reason that former gives more mobility & freedom in the field with equal picture quality. pl suggest. thanks.

Don't expect this lens to be cheap. I don't expect it in the 7000 USD range. I hope Canon surprises me by announcing it at great price.

This lens is going to be a highly popular lens. And there is no competition for this lens. So how much premium Canon is going to charge for this innovation is another question. I think they will place it slightly less than the 400mm f2.8 L IS II lens.
