Cute bird. A slight head turn towards you would have enhanced the eye contact further. You could have waited for it to turn towards you, as good eye contact enhances the composition further. What was the shutter speed? A off centered composition with some more space on the right would be good. Thanks for sharing.

I agree that since light was from the left and the bird is facing right, the eye is in shadow. That takes away from the image.
