It is not easy to shoot overhead. The sharpness of an image depends upon the shutter speed, your technique, lens, aperture used as well as the plane of focus. In this case, the critical focus is not on the eye. In these situations where the bird is far away with many branches nearby, the AF can lock on to any one of those. So one may need to cross check the AF.

Quite difficult to photograph through the branches. Its good that you got the eye in the clear. Agree with the above comments. DO check the AF point. Using Manual focussing can help in these scenarios. Thanks for sharing.
