A young Gaur during an early morning walk at Valparai. Posed for a few seconds and disappeared into the tea plantation to join its herd . .

I like the morning light. What focal length was this shot at? Was the mother around, and did you get any images of them together?

Hi Bhargava

The focal length must have been around 200 mm, for it was not very far from where we were walking.

I did not see its mom in particular but there were quite a few of them far away. In fact, i later figured out that the lone bull, which i had met almost within handshaking distance (detailed in another post) was part of this same herd.

Nice innocent look from the calf. The lighting is fantastic.

Do you think 400D is falls short of getting good pictures of wilflife with the 100-400mm?(I have 400D and about to make a purchase of the 100-400mm)

Hi Sankar

The 400D in my personal view, limits the capability of the 100-400 for two reasons. One, the 400D images become very noisy over 400 ISO and Two, the AF on the 400D is good only when the apreture is wide.

Otherwise, in my personal opinion, i think they are a decent pair, though nowhere near the 100-400 combined with a 40D or the latest addition in my bag, the 5D MII.

Thanks Rajanji for the information.

Despite having the Mark2 you preferred to use the 400D!That speaks volumes about the 400D.My confidence level has gone up.....

Oh yes Sankar, i do use the 400D often along with the 40D (where the crop factor is needed) inspite of hte 5D MII

However, this was pictured much before i bought the 5D MII (which is just a month or so old . . .)

Nice image of the teen gaur Rajanji :) The vegetation looks lush and the early morning rays on the gaur looks pleasant. Thanks for sharing.
