CS2 will be sufficient for a lot of photographers. I find lightroom to be the best for editing photographs and for cataloguing. Lightroom was designed keeping in mind photographers. Photoshop was more for effects. However, later Adobe introduced many of the features in lightroom itself, so photographers don't need to visit photoshop. I started with photoshop and then shifted to lightroom.
