    Default Unidentified Jumping Spider

Posting an image after a very very long time. Hope that sort of time gap isn't against forum rules!
ID please if you can... Got this at Karnala, Maharashtra. (Close to Mumbai)
By far the strangest spider I've ever seen. It was 1.5 to 2 cm long. The front pair of legs had some kind of bulging furry things that reminded me of Popeye's forearms. The small antennae like limbs next to the fangs (I think they're called the pedipalpi) were covered in white hairs, that made it look like it had a bushy white moustache.
Also the angriest looking spider I've ever seen!
Camera Model Name Canon PowerShot SX10 IS
    Shooting Mode Aperture-Priority AE
    Tv (Shutter Speed) 1/320
    Av (Aperture Value) 2.8
    ISO Speed 200
Reduced brightness in PP by about 5 units.
Sorry about photographing it on a concrete surface. I shot it on a plant too, but that didn't turn out so well. If a profile image can help in ID, I can post that too.

Good image. Never came across such a specimen. The diagonal stick looks good. if you can crop a bit from the right to remove the branching and give an off centre composition it might look better.

    Abhishek,
No idea about id. May be Vikram Gupchup and Apana can help.

Please remember that the depth of field increases with narrow apertures like f8. In Macro subjects one needs as much depth of field as possible. I think you could have sacrificed a bit of shutter speed and increased the aperture to f8.

Frontal lighting would have helped as well.

    Cheers,
    Sabyasachi

Nope, you need to try the SpiderIndia group on Yahoo, or e-mail the good folks at http://www.southindianspiders.org and see if they can help.

Sabyasachi, I do have an f8 image too. However, I didn't find a very significant increase in DOF, at east not for this frontal image. Or maybe I didn't observe it too closely. I'll take another look and post it if it's good. The sun was directly overhead, so proper frontal lighting wasn't possible. Also, it was heavily overcast, I clicked this when the sun came out for a few seconds. I tried using flash, but those aren't good.

Thanks Apana, I checked on s.indian spiders, it appears to be Portia fimbriata(on page 2). Image is somewhat similar, but description matches perfectly.

Do post the profile image . It will definitely help in the id. I haven't seen this one before.

The discription does match well with Portia fimbriata . Your image is much better than the one on South indian spiders .org

When I was using the S2is, I used to put on a 1X or 2X closeup filter on a lens adapter instead of using the inbuilt macro or the super macro setting.
This way I would be using the 420mm zoom and yet focusing closer.Increases the operating distance and using flash is much easier. Dof does get shallow , but backgrounds get beautifully blurred.

Will see if I can find some of those old macros..

    Will post the profile soon.
Vikram, you had once mentioned about easy-to-make flash diffusers. Could you give me some more details?
