Amazing sighting. Good you could get the eye and the mouth in clear. Seems it had already eaten most of the viper. Truly a rare moment to witness and capture. Thanks for sharing.

A fantastic sighting! That looks like a huge cobra. How long did this sighting last? Did you witness the event stage by stage?

It would be great if you could post the whole sequence of images, along with descriptions, in the Natural History section. (Note that the general forum rule is 'one image per thread'. In this case, it is best to post an entire sequence, and it is best to do so in the Natural History section.)

Nice action-packed image. This is a large Monocled Cobra (Naja Kaouthia). It is semi-aquatic, likes fishes and small snakes. The snake being eaten is not Russell's Viper, for sure; may be some keel back or water snake, as I see it. Very live picture.
Where exactly this has been photographed ?

The posting dated 09-05-2014 was made before my viewing the serial in Natural History Column, looking only at the tail portion of the prey in the image posted here. From the image (Sl. no. 2) posted in NHC, it is clear that the vanquished was a Russell's Viper. It is is a record image.
The location being now known to be in Kerala, an important question comes into my mind that Kerala is not mentioned (in books) as a state where Monocled Cobra is found. If my identification of the predator is correct, another valuable dimension is added.
