There are two subspecies: the Indian sloth bear (Melursus ursinus ursinus) and the Sri Lankan sloth bear (Melursus ursinus inornatus).

Nice sighting. Unfortunately the background attracts attention. In the earlier days we used to say "f8 and you are there". The reason was photographs were valued if the depth of field was adequate to show the relation between the subject and habitat. So I would have also loved to see the vegetation in the background.
