    Default Olive Ridley Mating

This was clicked near Astaranga inside the sea from a country boat. Ridleys mate in the shallow waters of Gahirmatha, Rushikulya and Debi (near Astaranga). The males ride on top of the females during the mating process. They float on the surface of the water as a cascade during the process. They are wonderful docile creatures. Ridleys come in numbers upto 2 lakhs every year to Orissa for mating and nesting. Unfortunately around 17-18 thousand die every year. A major portion of these deaths is due to turtles getting caught in trawler nets and drowning.

    Bibhav,
The splash tells us what is happening. :-) However, without the splash you would have got a clear view of the two.
