    Default Olive Ridley Deaths

I clicked this image on a beach near the Debi river mouth. Ridley come in numbers upto 2 lakhs every year to Odisha for mating and nesting. Unfortunately around 17 thousand die every year. A major portion of these deaths is due to turtles getting caught in trawler nets and drowning. These carcasses are thrown overboard by the fishermen into the sea. These get washed ashore and are a delight for Dogs and Jackals. A sorry state of these wonderful creatures given that around 1 out of around 1000 hatchlings survives to adulthood. If effective measures and restrictions on trawling are not enforced, we might actually witness the extinction of another species right in front of our eyes very soon.

    Ohh! What an image!

It sums up what is happening. Every year thousands of Olive Ridleys die while coming to the beach due to the trawllers as they violate the rules by coming closer to the area, and as they don't use Trawller Exclusion Devices - TEDs. And many more die in the beach due to the feral dogs.

Its time we wake up and take action. We will soon start a campaign.

    what a terrible sight...
this is a dying species... and abs NOTHING being done to save this from total extinction.... !!!
Official apathy and unethical business practices...!!!
Is there nothing that can be done to stop this massacre..???
Fishing is necessary.. agreed... a lot of people depend on it for a living. It is also a huge revenue earner for the govt....but is this the cost to be paid....????
There has to be some via media...
Indiscriminate killing of species while talking of wild life conservation....!!!!
Some thing/ some organisation or people have to do SOMETHING about this....before it is too late....
