    Default Nilgiri Tahr Face off.....

Around 800 tahrs are roaming the Eravkulam NP.It seems good conservation efforts are paying off in keeping the Tahrs from extinction. Here is proof of less man-animal conflict as this Tahr is standing right in the middle of the road.Of course with face turned the other way to give itself a soothing lick....

    I like the low angle.

Tahrs are facing problems as the grasslands are encroached upon by people. This fragments the grasslands and the Tahrs can't move from one part to another. Apart from limiting the area, it also results in inbreeding.

When people move in to colonise the wilderness areas, they not only bring their dogs, they also start solar fencing, so that no large animal can pass through. Unfortunately, the Solar fencing concept started in Australia has been propagated by experts from IUCN and adopted by our large NGOs in India. It stops the animals from their traditional migratory paths.

    Thanks for your information Sabya.

I dont know whether solar fencing is used in or near Eravikulam NP.But I know tea estates are very much there near the park with lot of vehicles moving around for that reason.

Kerala is one state with a very high population density but this may be lower in a place like Munnar. The no.of people living may be contributing to the difficulties of conservation.

The low angle perspective is nice. Did you get any image with its head turn towards you?

Its good to know that Niligiri Tahrs are prospering there. Thanks Sankar and Sabyasachi for sharing the information.

The low angle looks nice here. Good that you included the legs in full. I might consider tweaking the white balance a bit. Thanks for sharing.
