In this image, the spider spits a liquid at the gnat. The liquid congeals on contact with the air to form a sticky, venomous mass. While firing the liquid, the spider sways from side to side, effectively throwing the thread in a zig-zag pattern, so that most the gnat is covered by the thread.
(The gnat on the left has already been killed.)
