Default Tiger population increases in Sathyamangalam forest

The tiger population in Sathyamangalam forest has increased from 10 to 18 in the past two years, Conservator of Forests, Erode District, has said.

D Arun, the Conservator of Forests, said on Sunday that the recent census had shown an increase of eight tigers in the range in comparison with the 2009 figures.

Addressing a meeting organised by the Living with Nature Movement, Mr. Arun said strict vigil in the forest areas in the district had led to the increase in wildlife population.

He said the district has two forest divisions with vast forest cover: Sathyamangalam and Erode. As per the recent census, Sathyamangalam is home to 785 elephants, 564 Gaur, 212 Sambar variety deer, 309 spotted deer, 377 Black Buck deer, 127 wild boar, 19 panther and 18 tigers, he said.

Similarly, Erode forest division has 70 elephants, 20 bison, 645 spotted deer, 208 sambar variety deer and 20 panthers, he said.

Sufficient water and food were available for the wild animals inside the forest, but sometime due to migration, some elephants were entering private lands, causing damage to the crops, he said. In order to prevent such incidents, digging of trenches has already commenced in the forest areas, he added.

Good News Abhishek. After I came to know that Sathyamangalam-Moyasegur Sanctuary/Forest Area has been identified and recommended by NTCA to State Govt.(TN) to put up the formal proposal before NTCA for declaring it as a TIGER RESERVE, I was awaiting latest news about the Sanctuary. We are happy to read update posted by you and hope that Tamil Nadu Govt.will now be fully satisfied and put up formal proposal before NTCA and necessary formalities will be completed so that it could be declared as a Tiger Reserve.

Though WII have reported in the latest Census Report published in March,2011 about 20% increase in Tiger Population over 2005 census figure, reported loss of habitat is of serious concern and more Tiger Habitats have to be brought under Tiger Reserves category ,so that viable population is maintained and the Tiger corridors and Tigers are not lost for ever.

Default Satyamangalam WLS area increased to 1.41 lakh hectares

    Some good news:

The Tamil Nadu Government has announced that area of Satyamangalam Wildlife Sanctuary is being increased to 1.41 lakh hectares by adding 88,726 hectares. The major chunks of the additional area are 48,792 hectares from Guthiyalathur, 31,987 hectares in Talamalai reserve forest.

Wish the anthopogenic pressures are removed. There is still a STF (Special Task Force which was formed for catching the dreaded Veerappan) camp. There is also lot of crowd during festivals and it is a major nuisance.

This is a place where one can find Tigers, leopards, elephants, Hyenas, dholes, black-bucks, marsh crocodiles and some feral buffaloes. The feral buffaloes are pretty wild and are known to gore people. Conflicts also happen because of people cultivating inside the forest. Bursting crackers to scare away elephants is an everyday routine here and the elephants are pretty agitated and wary of humans.

Overall, this is a lovely place and with added protection and removal of encroachments can turn out to a stronghold for the tiger.

    Cheers,
    Sabyasachi

    Shri Sabyasachi,
I am delighted to read your Article posted on 27.09.2011.Every Five to Ten Sq.Km(depending on Prey species/ population density) addition of dense contiguous Forest to a Reserve means One Grown up Tiger will be able to establish its ownTerritory.Addition of 88,726 Hectares works out to 887.26 Sq.Km.Its a large addition no doubt and I am hopeful that the State Govt. is moving in the Right Direction and all formalities for declaring it as a Tiger Reserve will be completed hopefully within March,2012.
    Kind regards,SPP
