    Default Swamp Deer

    Dear All,
Swamp deer from the kaziranga national park. The eastern race of the swamp deer has been all but wiped out with the only surviving population restricted to Kaziranga and Manas.

This is taken early morning from an elephant in the central range.

    Look forward to comments.

    Cheers

A large part of the credit for saving that sub-species in Dudhwa goes to Billy Arjan Singh.

Nice to see an image of the swamp deer. Thanks for sharing.

    Shri Sabyasachi,
We pay our indebtedness, however insignificant it may be, when we acknowledge the contribution made by Late Shri Billy Arjan Singh.
With his firm conviction and the singleminded resistance he put forward and with his ability to convince our former conservation-minded Prime Minister, Late Shrimati Indiira Gandhi, North Kheri Forest Division was declared as a Wildlife Sanctuary in 1965,a National Park in 1977 and finally a Tiger Reserve in 1988 despite all efforts to convert it to sugarcane fields and to consume the finest sal forests of India.
    Kind regards,
    SaktiWild

    Shaktipadaji,
I had devoted the January 2010 issue of IndiaWilds Newsletter to Billy and his writings. It can be found here: IndiaWilds Newsletter Vol. 2 Issue I
